Overview
Mercedes-Benz PowerShift 3 is not one fluid capacity or one vehicle application; case, engine, ratio set, torque capacity, mechatronics and software variants must be separated.
Architecture class: DCT. Exact clutch pack, valve body, controller, fluid specification and fill procedure require code/label verification.
Do not decide on mechanical overhaul before checking engine torque management, system voltage, cooling and network communication.
Architecture and torque flow
- Transmission class: DCT
- Engine torque passes through a clutch, torque converter or power-split element to the ratio set.
- TCU monitors input/output speed and selected ratio.
Fluid, temperature and maintenance
- Generic ATF/MTF name or viscosity is insufficient; OEM approval is required.
- Level-check temperature and engine state vary by transmission code.
- Cooling and leaks directly affect fluid life.
Diagnostic sequence
- Resolve engine and low-voltage codes first.
- Save freeze frame, input/output speed, commanded gear and clutch slip.
- Separate electrical/solenoid faults from hydraulic pressure and mechanical slip.
- Do not reset adaptations blindly.
Post-repair verification
- Verify fluid level and leaks.
- Perform required basic settings/adaptation.
- Test safely in cold and hot conditions.
- Recheck pending DTCs, temperature and slip.
