Resting voltage is only part of battery health

Capacity, internal resistance and voltage under load are more useful than one open-circuit voltage reading.

  • Test after an appropriate rest period.
  • Capture minimum cranking voltage and current behaviour.
  • Measure cable and ground voltage drop under load.

Smart charging does not hold one fixed voltage

Modern energy management deliberately raises or lowers alternator output according to load, temperature and battery state.

  • Read commanded charging voltage/current from the vehicle.
  • Compare IBS/BMS data with physical measurement.
  • Verify battery registration or adaptation requirements after replacement.

Parasitic draw testing requires sleep state

Measuring current while modules are still awake can lead to false conclusions.

  • Allow the vehicle to enter its normal sleep state.
  • Use a current clamp or fuse voltage-drop method where appropriate.
  • Include aftermarket electronics and telematics in the investigation.
