DPF and EGR Fault Planning: Regeneration, Sensor or Mechanical Cause?

DPF loading is a calculated system state

The ECU estimates soot using operating history and sensor inputs. A biased pressure sensor, blocked hose or EGT fault can mislead the calculation.

  • Check differential-pressure offset with key on and engine off.
  • Compare pressure trend at idle and controlled higher speed.
  • Confirm regeneration prerequisites before commanding a regeneration.

EGR and DPF are coupled through combustion

EGR flow changes air mass, temperature and soot formation, so one fault can influence the other system.

  • Compare MAF response with EGR command and feedback.
  • Rule out boost and intake leaks before condemning the EGR valve.
  • Consider injector and oil-consumption problems that increase soot production.

Cleaning, regeneration and replacement solve different problems

Ash, melted substrate and sensor error are not interchangeable failure modes.

  • Ash does not burn away during regeneration.
  • A cracked or melted filter is not restored by cleaning.
  • A sensor or hose fault can make a healthy filter look restricted.
