P0420 and Catalyst Diagnosis Before Replacement

P0420 does not automatically condemn the catalyst

Catalyst monitoring depends on combustion quality, oxygen-sensor behaviour and exhaust integrity. Misfire, mixture faults or an upstream leak can distort the monitor.

  • Review misfire counters and fuel trims first.
  • Compare upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor behaviour at operating temperature.
  • Check for exhaust leakage ahead of the monitored catalyst.

Protect the replacement from the original cause

If a converter is genuinely degraded, the condition that damaged it must also be addressed.

  • Persistent misfire can overheat the substrate.
  • Oil or coolant consumption can contaminate catalyst surfaces.
  • Incorrect sensors or exhaust components can alter monitor behaviour.

Build the decision from several tests

A single idle snapshot is weaker evidence than trends captured at the load where the monitor runs.

  • Keep the original freeze-frame conditions.
  • Compare trims at idle and moderate load.
  • Use waveform or back-pressure testing when the basic data remains ambiguous.
