Compare requested boost with measured boost

Underboost diagnosis starts with the control loop: requested pressure, MAP, MAF and actuator command must be viewed together.

  • Capture requested and actual boost under repeatable load.
  • Pressure-test charge hoses, intercooler and joints.
  • Compare actuator command with actual mechanical movement.

A healthy turbo can be surrounded by a faulty system

Vacuum leaks, control solenoids, biased MAP data, open EGR or exhaust restriction can all reduce boost.

  • Measure vacuum supply and control output on vacuum systems.
  • Check supply, position feedback and adaptation on electronic actuators.
  • Consider DPF or catalyst restriction when turbine flow is limited.

Verify the lubrication path before replacement

When the turbo is damaged, the replacement must be protected from the same lubrication or contamination problem.

  • Inspect oil feed and drain paths.
  • Check air filtration and foreign-object evidence.
  • Evaluate excessive crankcase pressure or blow-by.
